out of everything you've mentioned...journaling is by FAR the most costly
operation being performed in this process. just try ending journaling do
your deletes and restart journaling. i would suspect this alone would cut
your processing time in half.

You know, Skip Marcasani (sp?) wrote a decade or so ago that this
maintenance isn't the bear it used to be on older versions of the
operating system. However there are always those who either are following

something they remember from decades ago, or Skip is just wrong.
