In Gmail you can see the extra stuff. Simply click on "Show quoted text" at the bottom of the email. When I switched to Gmail it took me a little bit to get used to the Label system, but it really grew on me.

I switched to g-mail for a while but came back straight away. Couldn't understand why I couldn't see the <extra stuff>.
