You can't do it in one step, but you can certainly do the upgrade in two
steps. The first question is do you have the install media for V5R3? If
so, I would upgrade to V5R3 first, and remember you need to read the
installation, read-me-first, and memo-to-users for both the release you are
going to and the one you are skipping. There is a CD that came with the
release called preparing to upgrade to V5Rx that you will want to load CD
before upgrading. You will be required to expanded the license internal
code, and I would make sure you had the latest PTFs on the release you are
upgrading from. In addition, make sure you have the latest resave of V5R3.
If you don't have V5R3 keys, no problem you will just have 70 days to do the
upgrade to V5R4. Expand the LIC again. I would upgrade to V5R4M5 of the
LIC, just so that when you are ready to go to Power6 box you will be able to
without any problems. Your 820 won't go to 6.1.

Subject: Upgrading from V5R1 to V5R4?

Can a system be upgraded in-place from V5R1 to V5R4? This is a 9406-820
which tops out at V5R4.

Thanks,
Loyd
