One is a character representation of a number and the other is a number. Each part of a dotted decimal address will, when converted to a number, fit in 1 byte (i.e., 0 to 255) and therefore four of them will fit in four bytes.

The standard way of doing this is to use a socket support API:
o inet_addr()
or (if supplied)
o inet_aton()
or (preferred)
o inet_pton()
