Subject: Drive replacement, System Restore and V5R4M0 -> V7.1 upgrade
results
Well, 0 for 3 ain't THAT bad....
Here is what I ended up with after my weekend of upgrades (attempted).
Backup: Save21 to SLR60 tape and drive ~ 6-7 hours.
Drive replacement: 30minutes.
Drive initialization and protection start: 3 hours
3 attempts to begin restore: 3 hours (long story: Understanding the
whole initialization with LIC/OS always takes me a few tries. I do this
about once every 4 years and the Recovery Guide doesn't have a step by
step for "Replacement of all drives" section so I am always a bit fuzzy
(Don't get me wrong, it has lots of good scenarios, but there is just
enough variability to making choosing one a challenge) . The options
during the D IPL are similar but different depending which menu branch
you take. All of which (for me) added up to a little trial and error.
Once I finally settled on the (correct) restore approach, I began the
restore. It took 12 hours and at the end, I still didn't have a warm
feeling that all was well. Some "soft" errors, which I had posted about
over the weekend, seemed benign enough but I was running out of time so
at 10pm on Sunday night I swapped the original hard drives back in and
fired the i back up.
It was the slowness of the SLR60 drive that was the killer. I really
can't think of a way to speed up the whole save/restore process. I
still have the new drives, which are configured with raid 5 and have the
LIC and OS installed along with the rest of the libraries restored. I'd
just have to refresh the user libraries and objects.
So here is the question: Given that the "system" (LIC/OS) *has* been
restored to the new drives, and I have the new drives properly labeled
so that I can replace them in the correct sequence, how best can I do an
abbreviated save/restore to get the system up and running? I think I
need to:
Save all the non IBM libraries (easy).
Save the non-IBM stuff in the IFS with a SAV *OMIT on QSYS and QDLS (?)
Save the NWS objects and storage.
If I have the above, I *should* be able to do a faster restore on these
new drives that already have the LIC/OS and other libraries (which will
be replaced/refreshed) installed, correct? Is there a greater danger in
taking this approach rather than a complete SAVE 21 / RESTORE 21 which
will take 18 hours?
Just looking for a way to save some time so I can troubleshoot any
problems that arise.
