let's see, you created a function with a date and a decimal INPUT
CREATE FUNCTION MTD(date, decimal(11,2)
and you pass it a decimal number only as it's input
SELECT TRNDATE, AMOUNT, MTD(AMOUNT)

Yeah, I can see where that might confuse the heck out of it.
