My application listens on port 443 and creates an SSL connection with
valid clients. It is only serving up unsecured content if you are not
supposed to be there.

I understand that the browser is expecting an SSL response but why
isn't that request going to my application, like the unsecured
request?

What is stopping it?

This isn't a SSL request ... it's an UNSECURED request to the SSL port (and is serving up unsecured content).

then go to HTTPS://205.144.103.214.443

I'm assuming you meant https://205.144.103.214:443 ... I suspect it isn't working because the browser expecting a SSL response, but not getting it.
