The debugging templates have nothing to do with the Cycle (just that an abbreviated flowchart of the Cycle is included). They do have to do with fixed-format coding in RPG II and III (I've never seen a template for RPG IV fixed-format, anyway).

The template, Mark, allowed programmers to ascertain what values were entered where when reading a program listing. At least on a 10 cpi listing. For example, A COMP B 64 doesn't quite tell you whether the 64 is >, <, or =. The template was particularly useful when debugging non-Calc specs. There was also a template for S&D specs (display formats on the S/34/36), which I also have (why do I keep these things and throw away the manuals?). In brief, the debugging template looked like the headings on the coding forms or, since many of our readers have probably never seen (much less used) a coding form, like the format heading in SEU or WDSc.

The templates were particularly useful back in the day when we had to submit our programs for compilation to a system operator, and all we had to deal with was a compiler listing. Since they were for fixed-format RPG II and III, they are not very useful today. Except as a straight-edge when drawing a line in the sand.
