Interesting... Can I assume that the battery will charge as long as it is
attached to0 the card? It was left in this degraded state for several weeks,
so if it's getting charged while plugged in, they have other problems.

Not sure if this is the issue, but apparently the new lithium ion
batteries come uncharged.

Customer upgraded a few weeks back and the IBM service guy didn't
pre-charge the batteries and they were in slow mode all day until the
batteries recharged.

subject: 5580 Aux Cache Card goes Degraded 6 hours after a new ( IBM )
battery

I have a client running an 825 as a DR box and No IBM maintenance. We
recently upgraded some of the disk controllers to 5580s with refurbished
(
aka Used ) parts. This controller ran fine for some period of time
initially
be then turned off the cache. After replacing the battery and we viewed
the
Battery Info and it showed the 1000+ days until the warning etc and the
card
was running normally. Looking at the logs and the drives they are now
Degraded again and the battery shows failed once again after about 6hrs.

I'm having the client swap batteries with the actual controller ( 2780 )
and
see if the problem moves to that card. Anyone seen this before? Any
other
ideas?

Thanks
