Following Scott's advice I downloaded 7-zip from his site to unzip my
save file. Included in the description is the note that one should
"Make sure your /qopensys/usr/local is symlinked to /usr/local".

That makes sense, but when I checked this system I found that while /
QOpenSys/usr exists there is no /local directory. Not surprisingly,
there is no /local entry in /usr either.

I've never seen a system without them before, so can someone tell me
when they normally get created. I'm working on an alien system here so
I'm being extra careful.

From my experience, (unix) systems don't usually ship with a /usr/local
directory. That directory usually will be created by either the
administrator who wishes to put his/her own stuff there, or by installing
some product. ("Product" doesn't necessarily have a grand meaning in this
case.)

For iSeries, I cannot say beyond the fact that the three (at V5R3) with
which I work lack /usr/local and /QOpenSys/usr/local.

One could also symlink /usr/local to /QOpenSys/usr/local. It's a matter of
semantics and preference. If you find a system that already has one but not
both of these, my advice is to symlink the other to it rather than doing a
lot of finagling to meet that spec as written. Scott may find reason to
differ on that point. I'd like to hear it.
