You can't use CL to get the row from an SQL SELECT statement - well, 
maybe, but it's complicated. Best to use embedded SQL in RPG.

Do you need the last check number for each company number in the file? 
You could do something like this -

select company_number, max(check_number) from check_file group by 
company_number
