Will they have WiFi access? That should work fine if they are out of range
of a GSM signal. All but the least expensive smartphones have WiFi.
BTW cellular data service is hardly pervasive in the US. There are plenty
of dead spots and we even have carriers like AT&T blaming the phones
(iPhone) for bad coverage when everyone knows it's their lack of capacity
planning& deploying, i.e. failure to invest in their infrastructure, that
is the real problem.
Somewhat timely, my wife's smartphone was stolen from her place of
employment earlier today. It is a couple of years old, so I guess it's time
for an upgrade.
