There is a required Microsoft patch before you put on the service pack - otherwise the service pack install hangs.

If you are still at V5R4 IBM i operating system: You can
acquire the V6R1 IBM i Access for Windows client while keeping
your IBM i operating system at V5R4 by ordering 5722XW1 (IBM i
Access Family) refresh feature 2649. This feature is available
at no charge to current 5722-XW1 IBM i Access Family customers
who have a software maintenance contract.
