Perhaps the CD/DVD drive in your system is particularly sensitive to static? :-)

The static straps that are only intended to be used a few times cost
very little. It may be cheaper, due to handling costs, to just through
one in with each OS upgrade than to include it as a parted item in a
hardware package.
