Exactly. Use the LIC first, and then you will need the other two.

By the way, we were just cleaning out the office and next to the box of old
Twinax cables, we found our old 9401 Luggable CISC box. We have it stored
in a movable "picnic" basket for at the time ease of movement, as the picnic
basket had wheels on it.

A true "Slip the LIC" should only replace 57xx-999 (the SLIC kernel), and
not have to "touch" anything else.

But, what you are saying is that you cannot really use the old "Slip the
LIC" technique to upgrade from 540 to 545 or 610 to 611, because those
upgrades actually require updating more than just the SLIC kernel
(57xx-999) apparently. :-o

If this is true, then those upgrades (from V5R4M0 to V5R4M5 or V6R1M0 to
V6R1M1) should be documented in such a way as to avoid any confusion, so
that people do not think they can "just slip the LIC" to do those upgrades.

So, SLIPing the LIC works fine, you just have to do more than just

IBM has always supported the method called "Slip-loading the LIC" as
far back as I can remember.

Are you saying that this no longer works, and you had to re-load
everything? :-o In what versions and releases of i5/OS (or just "i")
does this no longer seem to work?

Perhaps someone needs to open a PMR or DCR (or whatever) for this...
