Oh, I understand that they probably can't upgrade that particular
hardware... That's not the point! If I am paying for time on a host to
develop (or just play with) next generation applications and technology,
I'd expect to get access to a modern platform with all the modern
features.

I can well imagine that offering this service to developers would be
quite expensive to maintain, which is why IBM should be offering this.

It also gives IBM an opportunity to showcase new technologies to
idevelopers, where they can get their hands on it and play with it. In
most of the shops I have worked, it is EXTREMELY difficult to get
software loaded on the i, so that I can evaluate it. If IBM provided
the sandbox, we might be able to approach modernization projects in an
informed and confident manner.

How much is the OS version tied to the type of hardware it is able to

on? I have a machine on V5R3 that I would love to upgrade to V5R4 but
