A project manager here used to say that it takes upwards of 25 minutes to get back on track after an interruption. He had been a project manager at a good-sized utility here before, so I assume it is a known fact. I googled for "computer programmer interruption" and got lots of hits, including this that refers to several other publications -

One item from that article reads -

"At Microsoft each interrupt costs an extra 15 minutes for a full return to work after the interrupt completed."

Now at home, just don't answer the doorbell for the March of Dimes or neighborhood watch folks!
