Excuse for asking but, Why you say you can't update a CTE? I'm at V5R3.
I
can create a view using CTE and do an UPDATE on it. Heck, I can even
use it
with UPDDTA!!.

Luis, would you mind sharing that CTE that creates a view? I think there's
a misunderstanding going on here....
