That would work fine except that during a session a support developer would work with several support tasks, change the accounting code for the job several times and that we would have to verify which db-updates were performed for which of these tasks.

We will most likely not even store an accounting code in the user profile at all.

The accounting code is for use in the Job accounting Journal QACGJRN
logging job statistics when a job ends.

This journal doesn't keep entries for changes made to objects.

You need journal the objects you want to monitor in a separate journal
or use an existing. The USER is stored in the journal entries, and by joining to
the user profile you get the accounting code.
