Re-read the last sentence above.

Note that the two paragraphs above don't come one after the other in
the manual, there's a bit of other info between them.

Thanks. That and my impatience would explain why I missed this the first
time.

Thanks for the help on this, folks ('specially Simon and Charles). Looks
like the root problem was a partial- rather than full-read of the
documentation.
