Thanks Brian. I take it that just starting the mySQL server on the iSeries will make it listen on port 3306? Nothing extra to start like needed for native DB2 DRDA or ODBC ports to open (STRHOSTSVR) ?

MySQL on i is really no different than any other flavor of MySQL. You can
connect to the MySQL database running on i just like you would if it were
running on any other platform. MySQL listens on port 3306 unless you have
changed it. I know it works because I use a PC based database design tool
(MySQL Workbench) to connect to my box running MySQL remotely all the
time.

So the short answer is yes you can do exactly what you are asking.

For the same reason the mySQL to DB2 connection was created by IBM.
Existing application written to the mySQL standard for database access and
I would like to have it continue to run where it runs now but use the
iSeries and DB2 as its database.

Subject: RE: MySQL on i using DB2

With my SQL setup on system i using the connector for DB2, could an
application running on another platform access the mySQL database on
the i? e.g. Could I write a application that ran on a windows desktop,
or a mac, or another system i and have it access the mySQL database
(actually DB2). If so I would assume that I would use an ODBC driver
for mySQL. Is there anything that would need to be done on the system i
side to allow the connection? I read the IBM redbook and did not see
anything about how to configure mySQL to accept external connections.

Why would you want to, when DB2 is so easily accessible as it is?

I would imagine that you'd run into all sorts of security issues if you
tried something like this, so I doubt that it's allowed. And if this is a
circumvention for such security issues, I doubt you'd want to exercise it.
Having said that, I cannot say one way or another.
