This is bugging me. I am sure I have done this. Just don't remember if I did, or how.
Given a file named like this: MMDDYY.TXT
I want to rename (or copy it ) to 20YYMMDD.TXT
Might be multiple files, so I would do this:
for i in *.TXT
    do
        cp $i '20'...
    done
Is it possible to directly access the characters of the variable? I want to think that I can use $i[5]$i[6]. etc. But that doesn't work as variable value is not split. I could do this in CL using CVTDAT. Just seems that I had done this twenty plus years ago. Am I only thinking I had done this?
