I did finally have success with color overlays. (Lukas - I hit a properties setup with current AFP Viewer that worked before trying your copy of a new afp driver..will hang on to it if future problems).

Lukas's comments below, plus this IBM doc were helpful, plus the readme with the latest viewer.

Try this one instead. It's an unofficial release that we've got from
IBM after a case that lasted almost a year. It doesn't work 100%, but
it at's least halfway there and works better than all official
releases.

Note: You MUST uninstall all other AFP drivers before using it. Note
that drivers are not uninstalled after deleting the virtual printer.
You must uninstall the driver using the print server properties.

Always use 24bit Color and JPG images. Also, select convert Text to
Graphics to ensure consistent prints (which will be a bit pixellated).
