From: Hans Boldt
is the use of the word "Open" merely a marketing strategy?

Hmmm, a marketing strategy? IBM has one of those for IBM i? Actually, it appeared to me that much of Ian Jarman's presentation was geared to that end - that pairing Power and IBM i together, brings the OS into the mainstream, and positions it for new growth. Yesterday, Ross Mauri again characterized IBM i as "stragegic", in his announcement letter.

But I hope that Open I/O is more than a catchy name and part of a marketing strategy.

what is the advantage of "Open I/O" over just calling
a procedure directly to do the I/O?

Good question. I was hoping that this discussion would bring out more details, which appear to be very sketchy at this point. The most obvious advantage might be compiler generated code that automatically maps database buffers to Open I/O buffers and visa versa, or anything else that the compiler may do to streamline the interface. There is potential here.
