Yes, a view is often the replacement for internal descriptions. But that
seems tangential to the original question - how to convert the character
representation of a zoned negative to a numeric value. Several have
offered UDF solutions, I got one using the LOR function as suggested by
Chuck Pence, which, if I may say, is pretty sweet and could be a nice
basis for a view.
