Running the build of our IBM i ERP application (ILE RPG) took around
1.5 days on the old 270 that served as a development machine until
2007. It's now down to three or four hours on the model 515. Full
recompiles aren't done that often, though.
Now on Windows, you usually do not run most builds on a server, but
instead on the developers workstation - you usually do not have
hundreds of disk arms and 10+ cores available, like your machine
probably does. Larger companies and projects might employ build
servers, to offload the compilation task form the developer.
The build of our POS application suite or the ERP client usually takes
around 5-30 minutes - on a single socket, single arm client. It just
depends on how big and complicated your whole project is. Full
recompiles are more the norm here, mostly because they can complete in
a bearable time and can offer advantages.
