I was trying to use an SSH connection with a 10 character user id and it refused to connect claiming invalid ID/password.

It turns out (and many of you may know this already) that the user Id for SSH can only be 8 characters max as stated here:

http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/enable/site/porting/tools/openssh.html

What I don't understand is that the attempts to sign on with the 10 character Id resulted in it being disabled! This seems wrong to me - if 10 is too big for SSH you'd expect it to be truncated to 8 in which case the original Id would not be used.

Anyone else encountered this?
