I tried moving the sample file over to our v5 box, and trying your "sed" command. It ended up producing a huge block of text from just *before* the item of interest.

I got my own C-based idea adapted to the task, and it turned out to take a good five seconds, and to have other problems as well.

The situation is the retrieval of a web service license key from a huge XML file where the client stores settings, and sticking it into a data area where the server can access it easily. And to make matters worse, it's stored compressed.

At this point, I'm inclined to say it's not worth it. It would probably require more work for this minor "gee whiz" feature than for all other parts of the project combined, and the response time whenever it actually gets used would be terrible. If they want this capability to work from the server as well as from the client, they can bloody well spend half a minute putting the license key in by hand!
