Isn't there also an automatic journal capability based upon the presence of
a special data area (QAUTOJRN?) in the library? When the PF is created, the
rules specified in that data area determine whether journaling will
automatically be initiated for that file? The advantage here (if available)
is that you still get automatic journaling, but the journal may actually
exist in another library or ASP, which brings additional advantages. I used
to use such a technique (at least up until V5R3) but today a quick GOOGLE on
automatic journaling did not return what I'd hoped. YMMV.

There are as many techniques for journaling as there are reasons to journal.
I would certainly recommend that you separate your journals by application,
so that your save strategy and your recovery strategy can be customized by
application. At any rate, as you have surmised, some thought needs to go
into the process. You may actually have libraries in which you do not want
journaling, and this type of solution is also conducive to that approach.
