All I need is for it to be around for 5 more years.

And those who are retiring are being replaced by MBA-types who can't
wipe
their backsides without a mouse in their hand.

And how does a comment like this support the argument that the system is
alive and thriving? Times change. If you aren't keeping up the you are
being left behind. The system has come a long way from dumb terminals and
big twinax line printers. That doesn't mean that it meets everybody's
needs in a cost-effective manner. Maybe it doesn't need to meet the needs
of EVERYBODY. There's nothing wrong with serving a niche market as long
as management thinks that serving this market is maximizing their profit.
If it's going to be relevant in the future then it needs to evolve, have
support, and be promoted.

From a human perspective, you need to keep your skills up-to-date or you
will also be serving a niche market. Again, there's nothing wrong with
that as long as you like being where you are and don't anticipate every
loosing your job. I do programming and analysis on the i. I've learned
RPG, RPG/free, CL, DDS, SQL, etc. but that didn't stop me from getting my
MBA, learning HTML, Flash (which is not a language as was indicated in a
previous post), and work on project management certification (PMP). I'm
currently working on learning ASP and JavaScript. I'm also involved with
my family and community activities. If you have time to watch TV then you
have time to read a book.

You and the i might be adequate for now but if you aren't working toward
the future then you may not be relevant when it gets here. What's a dumb
terminal or twinax printer worth in today's market?
