That is a workspace - probably for WDSC or RDi. Do I remember that you used to put your workspaces on the IFS with mapped drives? And that you stopped doing that?
It is probably a lock file of some sort - and with the lock, it could not be allocated.
Just another reason not to do that, my friend!!

the only IT person, the backup runs in a restricted state at 12:01am, and I
guarantee I am not working at that time. :)
I was wondering if that link should just be deleted.
