All I really needed is the last modified date of the source file

Instead of "last modified" do you mean "last accessed"? In other words,
what is listed as the "Last access date/time" on the WRKLNK screens? An
sftp "get" should not have any affect on the WRKLNK "Data change date/time"
attribute of the source file, but it will update the "Last access date/time"
attribute of the source file. I do not believe there is a way to avoid this
directly within sftp. You may be able to work around by first saving the
source file into a *SAVF on the source machine and then transferring (and
restoring) the contents of the *SAVF.
