I do believe that's it! Protect | Nondisplay (A7 hex) is functionally equivalent to turning off a field's "existence" condition; Underscore (24 hex) is equivalent to turning it on for an input field.

. . . the DSPF compiled just fine . . .

. . . the program likes the DSPF well enough to compile . . .

. . . and it actually WORKS!
