Any IPDS printer may or may not have resident fonts. It is part of the printer reply in the IPDS start up sequence as to whether or not it HAS resident fonts and exactly which ones it has. The PSFCFG switch simply tells PSF/400 whether or not to use printer resident fonts. To safely built "print anywhere" applications, specify a font and test with printer resident fonts set to *NO to see how it will print.
If your printers support outline fonts, see if you have the series that starts with CZH20x. (They might end in 0, or 2 or 7)
CZH20x Helvetica Regular
CZF30x Helvetica Italic
CZH40x Helvetica Bold
CZF50x Helvetica Bold Italic
If you don't have those or support for outline fonts, look for raster fonts starting with C0H2 or C0H4.
If you end up having to load many AFP resources, I've code to share that makes it less painful.

Subject: Printer msg PQT2072 font sunstitution
How does one determine "why" a font is not resident on a printer?
Am I correct it is the definition on the iSeries with the problem, not the actual printer (in this case it's software called Oneprint Server, used by a fax product to process *afpds spools.
I can find PQT2072 in google and IBM Redbooks and Info Center, and all they do is reiterate the text of the message.
Trying to use font 2304 (helvetica) in a *afpds spooled file.
What I really need is proportional fonts in multiple sizes, bold/no bold from point size 7 thru 12.
Helvetica preferred (2304, 2305).
When the spooler goes to print it - the substitution occurs.
The printer is defined as IPDS.
There is a PSF Configuration, resident fonts=Yes.
All the fonts it substitutes to are fixed width. No good.
I can use the same spool, use a pdf converter like Gumbo Software, and it works great. Send it to the IPDS printer - no.
