The CSV seemed to work, but I lost the column headings. Help Systems seemed baffled when I brought up the possibility of sending a formula in a file down to Excel, which suprised me because their tech support is usually very good.

The XLS files I generate with Sequel are in the Excel binary format.
Jeff, if you want to use Sequel you'll have to talk to Helpsystems to
find out if this is possible. Otherwise, you may be able to get
something to work by generating a CSV using the syntax Terry suggested,
or use POI from an HLL program.

If you get something working without POI, I for one would love to hear
about it. I've thought about trying to do something similar before, but
it hasn't been important enough to spend the time researching.
