Because we run SQL Server 2003, not 2005,

FWIW, there is no SQLServer 2003. There was 2000, then 2005, now 2008.

What about connectivity hosted on the i?

I know, you want it on the i. But it may be well worth it to consider a
PC based solution that accessed both the ePac SQLServer DB and the i DB.
I'd look at .net as an environment to do this in, simple enough to
access both DBs. Java would obviously be a good solution too.

Another solution that's not quite as straight forward would be PHP. Yes,
use a web app to do the data migration/conversion/integration. PHP can
access both DBs without a problem and you can run that "natively" on the
i. Of course you'd have to request a web page to do the data move, but
that could be scripted.
