Here's just a short list of what SCM system's can do ...

. Automatically manage dependencies on LF's & PF's so the
necessary programs can be recompiled.
. Provide intelligent compilation so objects are recreated correctly.

Our own tool does these things although it might be less easy to use.


. Manage concurrent development so changes made by two
developers simultaneously are identified.

Our system prevents another developper from taking a source from production that another has already. Although there's nothing stopping programmer 2 from copying programmer 1, making his own modifications and installing.

. Provide compare & merge functionality

Merge sources during installation? I don't think that would be allowed here.

. Deploy to multiple levels of QA before moving into production.
