A lot of this takes faith. Pre HMC we used to be an Op's Console shop. I
couldn't begin to fathom how something iSeries Access could talk to a
machine in a restricted state. Op's Console just does. And, yes, people
are enamored with direct attached devices - be it twinax, serial cable or
hardwire lan cable. However the freedom of a lan attached device, without
a dedicated connection, allows you to do all sorts of stuff. Like if you
have two consoles (either HMC or Lan Console) controlling machines in two
different locations. And one goes down, (or you're just working at the
other location), taking over the machine from the other console is a nice
idea.
Twinax doesn't give you this capability.
Twinax to a emulation card on a PC still doesn't allow a second to take
it's place, remotely, if the first one dies.
