I haven't been following the mentioned thread.

Tell us specifics about how you've written the excel addins.

To use an exceptional environment, the user loads a template file
with the environment identification built into the filename. The
addins look at the names of files loaded in the instance of Excel
and adjust the connection string accordingly.

This scheme applies the exceptional environment to (typically)
the rest of the Excel instance. I think that is good, but again
I welcome comments.

The addins already put a custom option on the Excel menu bar.
Obviously, the label of that option should make the environment
manifest. Aren't afterthoughts wonderful?

Cheers,
Terry.

subject: PC programs and IBM i environments

Greetings,

The thread "Stored procedures and library independence" returns
this question to the top of my mind, but it is a (slightly)
different question.

I have (a customer with) a bunch of Excel add-ins which retrieve
data from the IBM i into spreadsheets. Occasionally, a PC user
needs to fetch data from an environment other than the usual one.
I am not happy with any mechanism that I have invented to let the
user change to an exceptional environment.

All comments welcome. A good solution would be good <grin />,
but "generally accepted" is also good.

Thanks,
Terry.
