IBM traditionally jacks up maintenance on older equipment if for no other
reason than to say "See how much this new equipment could save you on
maintenance?".

We used to use third party maintenance decades ago. It really wasn't too
bad. And that was two different companies. We just decided to become an
all IBM shop. What you will find is that the third party people take IBM
and discount a percentage. For example, if company X saves you 15% off of
IBM maintenance and then IBM maintenance jumps up 54% then X will raise
their rates to 15% off of IBM's new rates. Therefore, they jump also. It
doesn't matter if IBM artificially inflates their rates to make the new
hardware look good. All company X thinks they need to do is save you 15%
off of IBM's rates.
