What the OP might want to look at in SQL Server is SSIS - SQL Server Integration Services - the follow-on to DTS - Data Transformation Services.

Once you set up a connection with your ODBC driver (have done that in DTS, not in SSIS) or your OLE/DB provider (SSIS likes those better, I think), then it's a piece of cake.

Another place to start is the iSeries Access DeveloperToolkit - you can install that as an option when installing iSeries Access - gives you links and examples.

BTW, you can get to iSeries data through Excel using the Query tool there, or from any VB app. There is a .Net provider, also, for iSeries.
