That might work. We don't currently keep before and after images, only one, but I'm not sure which one. If it's after, which makes the most sense, we should be OK.

If I understand the new functionality correctly the audit stamp will get updated any time the record is updated regardless of the update source.
The tables in question are validation tables which shouldn't be maintained very often but do control what values are allowed into other tables. If a problem arises with a validation record I would like to know who made the last update and when. I can force the fields to change using a maintenance program but I don't have that kind of control if SQL or DBU is used for the update.

At 5.4 it looks like my only option is a trigger.
