From: Evan Harris
I can just see Oracle positioning this as a turnkey database
appliance ...

Your thinking seems to be inline with Oracle's. Quoting from the press release on their web site:

"The Sun Solaris operating system is the leading platform for the Oracle
database, Oracleâs largest business, and has been for a long time. With
the acquisition of Sun, Oracle can optimize the Oracle database for
some of the unique, high-end features of Solaris."

Their statement concerning Java also struck me:

"Java is ... the most important software
Oracle has ever acquired."

They also included a statement from Scott McNealy.

âThis combination ... will be an industry-defining event.â

It appears to me that the suits at Oracle and Sun are positioning themselves as a formidable rivals of IBM. There seems to be quite a bit of chatter saying that IBM must be kicking themselves.

Oracle ends up with a complete hardware-software stack; chips=>servers=>operating systems=>virtual machines=>developer languages & tools=>DBMS=>applications=>consulting ...

Nathan.
