A lot of traffic for such a question, so my two cents:
Newer OS (not sure what ver, V5R4 definitely) in SST will tell you a) if
you can change the battery concurrently (F11 on the "Work with Resources
Containing Cache Battery Packs" screen) and b) allow you to fail the
battery

You must fail it for the counter to get reset, but once you do you are on
right-through caching and not write-back, so performance can degrade. That
is also the consequence of going past the warning period to the error
period.

I've never seen a swollen battery in at least 12 changes over the years.

I was also cautioned not to do a PWRDOWNSYS *IMMED but rather do a *CTLDWN
, even if I had previously end the system to restricted state, as there
could still be unwritten cache data. (Would not apply if the cache battery
was failed, but say if you were going to move the system or some such
reason)

I think it's something in SST where you actually fail the battery or some
such animal.
We pay IBM big bucks and let them worry about it.
