I have now created a function to invoke the sub-procedure so I can
use it in a trigger program to effect the encryption. When I try to
do an insert using the new function I get the MCH0602 error which
seems to imply that parameters are miss-matched (from a google
search).

RPG compiler APAR SE23336 describes a similar problem:

"An RPGLE subprocedure, registered as an SQL user defined
function, fails with MSGMCH0602 when the function is called
from an SQL statement and returns a character subfield that
is more than 16 bytes in length."

If you are returning a subfield, you may need the PTF for this APAR.

V5R4 SI23600
V5R4 tgtrls(V5R3M0) SI25232
