I wouldn't think that you would need to be concerned about airflow to the
bottom or top. It can get pretty tight in a rack. Heat transfer too.
Just keep good airflow to the front and back.
If you build a peaked roof out of sheet metal and place over it that might
help to discourage anyone from assuming the top of the equipment is
capable of load bearing. That's why IBM has stickers all over their tape
drives to discourage people from placing items on top. I suppose you
could construct a cabinet out of wood just to bear load people may put on
top.

Gee, I wonder if I can place this 5251-11 on top of the CPU?

If it's like my home or garage, any flat surface gathers objects.
