We also have a T1, and yes it does take a long time.  It's no big deal, 
though, I just run the FTP overnight.

Before we had adequate disk space on our iSeries, I did exactly what you 
describe, Roger, except that I burned the PTFs to CD from home and took 
the CDs into work, then loaded the PTFs straight from CD.

However, the difference between a 6 hour download at home and a 16 hour 
download at work is mitigated somewhat by the fact that I have to go 
home (which I usually do when I'm "done working" for the day -- using 
the term "done working" very liberally) and I'm not planning to come 
back to work until the next morning.

That being the case, it makes very little difference whether the 
download takes 6 hours or 14 hours, since I'm going to be gone (and 
therefore not applying the PTFs) for 16 hours anyway.  When I come back 
into work the next day, I find all of my PTFs have downloaded and are 
already loaded into image catalogs waiting.

Doing it where I burned CDs at home, I would have to go home, then take 
extra time to write the CDs, and extra time to load the PTFs from the 
CDs when I got back to work.  Or in your case, you have to copy the CD 
images from your USB drive, probably across a network, to your i.  Not a 
big deal, but it does take some time.

So even though the download is more than twice as long, I find it more 
convenient to download direct to the IFS.
