Fair question.

Here is what makes me like a portal. http://www.liferay.com/web/guest/products/portal/features
Create an account. It takes about 5 minutes, and then see what you can do with their portlets and then imagine writing your own portlets to drop onto the portal inventory.

Subject: Design decisions about user interface

Okay, here goes. I love the look and feel of a portal, even ahead of a dashboard. I am seriously wanting to use a portal solution. Thats my bias, thats where I am starting from.

I mention this to people who know about stuff and who are a lot brighter than me, and they just roll their eyes and pat me on the head. When I ask why they feel that way about portals their answers are pretty simple, usually along the line of "thats so old fashioned!"
Now, I don't question their stance, but I just don't see any new replacement ideas that appeals to me half as much as portals.

Hence I am posting this to see what sorts of solutions others are using for a new user interface. Perhaps along the way I will come to understand why portals are so old fashioned and out of favor.
