If you don't like the wedge idea it sounds like it's time to either
a - Convert from a 5250 based application to client server or something
that can read from the PC to the scale.
b - Have a function key or MOUBTN configured to perform an action on the
server to go poll the scale.
Now, if there's some physical consideration, like you forklift the item on
the scale, walk over to the display to read it, and then forklift the item
off the scale that might be a PITA. Then you might have to have a server
program running on the i that just reads the scale and a button on the
scale sends the data. Then your function key or MOUBTN could read from
the storage of the server program. Now, if that storage is a data queue
you need to consider LIFO processing on the data queue and what if there
is more than one entry, like someone 'sent' the data 5 times from the
scale but you only hit the MOUBTN once? What to do with the extra
entries? That sort of rot...
