Hi Frank,

Just to let you know about the printing side of the equation - use of Power i support for Unicode automatically forces the creation of *AFPDS spool files. The host print transform function of i OS is fully capable of transforming *AFPDS spool files with unicode characters to PCL. At V6R1, IBM has started shipping a native *AFPDS to PDF conversion program, which is also fully unicode compliant. This means you can create PDF documents with characters from multiple languages on them as well (ex: shipping manifest for products going from Japan to PRC China).

I worked on a project last year for a customer who was globalizing an ERP package by updating its source code to use Unicode and I helped with some of the report printing aspects of the upgrade. I learned a lot and I feel the IBM developers did a masterful job of integrating Unicode support into the i OS architecture.

Best Regards,

/Paul

But the objective of working with Japanese, PRC Chinese, and English to
mention just a few languages) in one 5250 session, simultaneously, has been
possible for a few years now.???
